My sister Jessica had an interesting experience a little over a month ago. She goes to ASU and one night she was driving down the road and guy on a bicycle ran into her car. Not a motorcycle or even a scooter but a regular bike. It did a lot of damage to her car and when the police came they made it a crime scene because they weren’t sure whether the guy was going to make it or not. He was taken away in an ambulance and had to stay in the hospital for several days but he is doing ok now.
Jessica had to stay on the scene for two and a half hours being questioned by the police. They asked her a lot of questions and did a lot of tests on her. When they asked where she had been the night before (Halloween) she was able to tell them that she was at the Mormon Institute dance. A witness stopped and told the police that she was going the same speed as Jessica at the time of the crash which was 5 mph under the speed limit. When they made her walk the line, do the breathalyzer test and even do blood tests she came out 100% clean. With every new question or test she held absolutely no responsibility for the accident. If she had even been doing one thing wrong I think all of the responsibility for the accident would have been immediately transferred to her. She was so protected because she was following every law perfectly.
As I have considered this experience of hers over the past month I have compared it to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. All of the commandments that He gives us are for our protection. I want to have His protection in my life and I am striving to obey the commandments as perfectly as my sister was obeying the law in order to have it. I saw how blessed she was for following the laws of the land and I know that I will be blessed even more as I follow the laws of my Savior and Redeemer. If you have the right attitude it is easy to realize that all laws are put in place to offer us protection and freedom. I am so grateful for all of the laws and commandments and the blessings that come from following them.
I really wish I could express my feelings more clearly and deeply but I’m afraid this is the best I can do at this late hour and during this crazy time of year with finals looming among other challenges. I hope you are able to understand the spirit of my thoughts because I really wanted to share what I have been thinking about.
